Nurse Practitoners

Nurse Practitioners are registered nurses (RGN) who have completed an additional three-year Honours Degree supported by advanced clinical training. Their role is modelled on the American system, which has been in operation since the 1960s. In order to provide complete healthcare, Nurse Practitioners:

  • Obtain medical histories and perform physical examinations

  • Diagnose and treat common health problems

  • Diagnose, treat and monitor chronic health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure and asthma

  • Promote positive health behaviours and self-care skills through education and counselling

  • Collaborate with the General Practitioners and other health professionals

Registrars

North Cardiff Medical Centre is a training Practice. Registrars are medically qualified and many have a great deal of hospital experience. Their training in the Practice is centred on the role of the General Practitioner. They are available for consultations in exactly the same way as the other doctors in the practice. On occasions patients may be asked for their permission to video record their consultation. Video recording will only be undertaken with patients' consent and the camera will be switched off on request.
